We often get questions about property taxes. People want to know what their taxes are for, and where the money goes. That's great -- we love to have people understand this complex process and we're happy to try to answer your questions.
One of the important things to remember is that the Township acts as a collecting agent for many other taxes. School taxes, County taxes, the library, the jail, and the Fire Authority all rely on the local units to collect taxes. As you will see by the charts, many other "taxing units" also are involved in the amount of tax you pay.
Our first chart below shows all the taxes that are levied on property in Pere Marquette Charter Township for the year 2004. The yellow area represents your Summer Tax, and the orange area is Winter Tax. Please note the lighter orange area of Winter Taxes -- this is the amount that actually comes to the Township instead of to another taxing unit. If your property has a Principal Residence Exemption, the large area called "School Operating" will not apply to you.
